What Are the Magic Words if You Get Arrested? Hint: it doesn’t consist of “I did it.”
“I want an attorney.” That’s it. Four very simple, yet very sweet little words.
Really, you say? Would I lie to you (hold the lawyer jokes)?
Those four little words will get those feisty fuzz off your back for the time being. Luckily for you, there’s this wonderful little piece of paper called the U.S. Constitution that the U.S. Supreme Court has interpreted to state that you have a Constitutional right to an attorney during police questioning.
Don’t get fooled by thinking that being polite and cooperating with the police officer will get you anywhere. Remember, the only reason they are speaking to you is because they think you committed a crime, and trust me, they don’t like to be wrong.
Speak up, request an attorney, even if you think you don’t need it.
