Attorney Tyson Mutrux describes in this video the purpose of an Independent Medical Examination (IME).

Hi, Tyson Mutrux here with the Mutrux Law Firm and today I’m answering the question of, “What is an independent medical examination?”

Now, it is just a fancy term for having you evaluated as a client, or if your loved one is a client, having them evaluated by a doctor to determine long-term prognosis, long-term treatment, and the cost of what that treatment might be. That’s really all it is.

In reality because all sides use them, whether it’s the defense or the plaintiff’s side, both sides use them, there is nothing independent about them. Usually on the defense side, they’ve retained an expert to try and discredit your treating doctors. Or, if we’ve retained an expert on our side, then they will try to discredit our doctor.

So that’s all it is. An independent medical examination, again it’s not very independent, but it’s just where you or sometimes they’ll evaluate your records. They’ll do an examination of them and review your file. They will then give an opinion as to your prognosis, your treatment, the amount of your treatment. Or if the defense is doing it they’ll usually attack things like the amount of the medical bills or the treatment that you received, or they’ll say that the diagnosis was incorrect, or that you weren’t as injured as your doctors say.
