What to do if you have a warrant for your arrest

Attorney Tyson Mutrux describes in this video What to do if you have a warrant for your arrest.

Hi, Tyson Mutrux here with the Mutrux Law Firm and today I want to discuss what to do if you have a warrant out for your arrest. Now a lot of times what people want to do is, they’re going to run, hide out, “I’ll wait until they find me”, etc. That’s usually a very very bad idea, and for a couple reasons. The main reason is, they are going to catch you at some point. Typically what they are going to do is they are going to catch you at some point, and you’re going to be stuck in jail and you’re not going to be able to get a bond.

There are two factors that a judge must consider. To set your bond or to release you under a recognizance bond. One of the major factors is flight risk. The other is danger to community but we will focus on flight risk. If the judge deems that you’re a flight risk because you’ve been absconding for let’s say it’s a month, two months, three months or a year. You’re deemed a flight risk and they’re not going to give you a bond. Or they’re going to give you a cost prohibited bond which is a really high bond. It’s something you’re not going to be able to pay. You’re going to be stuck in jail for the duration of the case.

So you want to make sure that if you have an outstanding warrant and a bond, get an attorney if you’re concerned. Or if you can’t afford an attorney, maybe contact the public defender’s office in advance because if the case will be pending, and you can probably apply for a public defender. Get that taken care of because the last thing you want to do is get caught months down the road. Guys, this is not something that is going to go away. This is not something where the law is going to forget about you. The case is going to sit there. If it’s a paper file it’s going to sit in the drawer until you’re picked up. If it’s an electronic file it’s going to be there forever before they finally catch up with you and you don’t want this thought in the back of your mind every time a police officer pulls up behind you that you’re going to get arrested. So the best thing for you to do is turn yourself in, let an attorney deal with it and move on with your life.
